The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that fully vaccinated people are allowed to leave the house without masks. Although people have speculated that COVID might still linger within fully vaccinated people’s saliva and noses, the CDC states that it is unlikely. The CDC proves this by running diagnostics and research. With more Americans getting vaccinated, the transmission rate declines.
“The first U.S. multisite test-negative design vaccine effectiveness study among health care personnel found a single dose of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to be 82% effective against symptomatic COVID-19 and 2 doses to be 94% effective”(Fox).CNN Article, “What’s the science behind CDC’s decision to say fully vaccinated people don’t need masks?”
Once you get fully vaccinated, does that mean you’re protected forever?
In short, no. While it is still unclear how long the protection will last, it is estimated to be at least 6 months. However, it is still important to receive the vaccine regardless.
Can we really trust everyone that goes mask-free?
While the idea of finally being free from wearing masks everywhere sounds like freedom, can we really trust that only fully vaccinated people will be having them off? One reason why CDC is allowing the No-Mask Mandate is to encourage more people to get the vaccine. However, there is no way to make sure that every single person without a mask is vaccinated. Although there are vaccine cards, there will not be guards waiting around in the sidewalks just to patrol that every single unmasked person is vaccinated. This strikes the controversy.
What do the nurses have to say about this?
On Saturday, the nation’s largest union of registered nurses (National Nurses United) criticized the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for removing the recommendation for vaccinated people to wear masks. They worry that this would put both frontline workers and people of color (POC) at risk. A mask protects others from contracting COVID more than yourself. The union also criticized the CDC’s decision to stop recording cases within vaccinated individuals unless it results in hospitalization or death. The CDC stated this to “maximize the quality of the data collected on cases of greatest clinical and public health importance.” The union is outraged since the United States has suddenly decided to create more leeway and freedom in the middle of a deadly pandemic.
