Is California Reopening?

After over a year of wearing masks in public spaces, is it finally time to take it off and see other people’s faces. Well, the answer seems to be both yes and no. A Fox News anchor asked the governor or California whether we will still be required to wear masks on June 15 and beyond. The governor responded, “No, only in those settings that are indoor… Only in those massively large settings where people from around the world, not just around the country, are convening and where people are mixing in real dense spaces, Otherwise we’ll make guidance, recommendations but no mandates.”

So it seems that the governor is planning on easing masks rules to make most situations not require a mask. However, he does say that certain scenarios like large indoor gatherings will have a mask requirement. However, the California Department of Public Health sees it differently. According to Fox News, “The California Department of Public Health guidelines call for face coverings in “indoor settings outside of one’s home,” like public transportation, regardless of vaccination status. Unvaccinated individuals are required to wear masks outdoors “any time physical distancing cannot be maintained.”  Fully vaccinated people don’t need to wear masks outdoors “except when attending crowded outdoor events.”

This shines light on the issue that, although people have been vaccinated, it still leaves the door open for a potential next wave. Last time when we saw a flattening of the curve, it incentivized reopening. However, this resulted in yet another spike in Covid cases. USA Today states “At the height of restrictions in late March and early April, more than 310 million Americans were under directives ranging from “shelter in place” to “stay at home.” Health officials warn that easing restrictions too soon could bring new outbreaks, but many states forged ahead.”
