Covid has been settling and the US hit two “significant milestones” in its vaccination program Friday — with 150 million Americans having received at least one dose and 110 million fully vaccinated, that means 57 percent of adult Americans have received at least one vaccine shot, according to federal data.
Fauci has always wanted for society to come back to normal, however with recent risks of a new variation and how people are becoming too relaxed, he called for a more liberal policy.
Dr. Fauci said that as vaccinations climb, “we do need to start being more liberal” in terms of rules for wearing masks indoors, though he noted that the nation was still averaging about 43,000 cases of the virus daily. “We’ve got to get it much, much lower than that.”
The C.D.C., which issues national guidance on masking, says that even vaccinated people should continue to wear masks in indoor public spaces, including restaurants when they are not actively eating and drinking. In many places across the country, it is clear that the guidance is not being followed.
Zients explained that in order to meet President Biden’s new goal of getting at least one shot into the arms of 70 percent of Americans by July 4 and reaching 160 million fully vaccinated by the same date, roughly 100 million more doses need to be administered. This is a huge leap and will be another great contributing factor to getting everyone vaccinated. He also said, “We’re focused on three key areas — improving access and making it even easier for everyone to get vaccinated, second, building vaccine confidence and, third, ensuring equity is at the center of everything we do.”
With a better vaccine and better mandates many believe that we can get back to normal faster than expected.
