Last Tuesday, on April 20, 2021, Derek Chauvin’s trial took place. It was reasonable for trying to get him under control in the first few seconds, but after he became responsive and wasn’t resistant, even when he unconscious, wasn’t right for Derek Chauvin to keep his knee on his neck despite Floyd yelling that he couldn’t breathe. However, Chauvin’s defense was that there was a range of potential factors in Floyd’s death, including what it said was Floyd’s enlarged heart, fentanyl and methamphetamine in his system and possible carbon from the squad car exhaust. In opinion of Baker, the medical examiner stated, “While fentanyl and heart disease may have contributed to Floyd’s death, they were not the direct cause. They also defended Chauvin saying that the actual time was 7 minutes 46 seconds that Floyd was pinned to the ground. However, it made no difference, “it was long enough to kill him, long enough to execute him.” On April 20, 2021, Derek Chauvin was charged with unintentional second-degree murder, Third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. The maximum sentence for second-degree murder is 40 years, 25 years for third-degree murder, and 10 years for second-degree manslaughter.
