This week, Apple kicked off another virtual event-”Hi, Speed”. This event had many exciting and anticipated announcements, namely the iPhone 12 lineup. The homepod mini was also announced, and 5G was a main talking point of the event.
The iPhone 12 Lineup
The iPhone 12 Lineup consists of the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 mini, the iPhone 12 Pro, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. All of these phones feature 5G support, meaning increased download and upload speeds on cellular data. These benefits will be clearly visible when gaming on data, streaming on data, or using data when public networks are filled with others. Also emphasized by the name of the event, 5G speeds will be very fast compared to current 4G networks.
The iPhone 12 hosts several different features all designed to enhance user experience. With a 6.1 inch display and smaller bezels, the screen is larger than other models in a smaller form factor. It features glass backs and rounded corners, very reminiscent of the iPhone 4. It will be available in black, white, product red, green, and blue colors. The iPhone 12 gets an upgrade in processing power with the new A14 Bionic Chip that is significantly faster than the previous A14 and other industry chips. Magsafe allows iPhones to have safe Qi charging with stronger magnets. Finally, there are the new Ceramic Shield displays, which are said to greatly increase protection against drops. The iPhone 12 Mini has essentially all the same features with simply a slightly smaller display and chassis.
The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max are visually stunning in their new colorways. They are available in Pacific Blue, Gold, Silver, and Graphite. Additionally, they come with surgical-grade stainless steel edges as opposed to the standard aluminum. Additionally, the cameras can shoot in a new file type (ProRAW) that makes it easier for editing. With a new LiDAR scanner and HDR recording at 60 fps, this camera has undergone a major update.
These new phones are planned to ship and be available before the end of the year. The iPhone 12 is available for pre-order on October 16 and regularly on October 23. The iPhone 12 mini will be available for pre-order on November 6 and regularly on November 13. The iPhone 12 Pro is available for pre-order on October 16 and regularly on October 23. Finally, the iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available for pre-order on November 6 and regularly on November 13.
The Homepod Mini
The HomePod mini is the miniature version of the original HomePod in a much smaller form factor, and with improvements in audio quality and interface. HomePod minis allow for immediate syncing with the iPhone like AirPods and can be used with smart appliances. Additionally, the HomePod has a display on top that doesn’t actually display information, but lights up when Siri is invoked and can be used to control volume and playback. Finally, the HomePod mini is only $99, allowing for the possibility of stereo systems and multiple HomePod minis around the house.
